Aside from the endless blue
skies, turquoise waters, sun filled days and evenings spent sampling the
local delights and dancing till dawn...the Bodrum Peninsula is also
overflowing with culture and history. Just a few places worth
mentioning:
The Mausoleum of Halicarnassus is one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World dating back to 353 B.C. Now an open air museum, it was built by Artemisia II in honor of her husband and brother Mausolus, the King of Caria. Easily reached by Dolmus the museum is open Tuesdays through Sundays. The Castle of St. Peter is Bodrum's most prominent landmark. The grounds of the castle cover some 30,000 square metres and is also home to a fabulous underwater archaeology museum. Here you can view artifacts taken from sunken ships dating back as far as 16th century BC, and more. A trip through the castle must not be missed. The Ancient Amphitheatre has without a doubt, one of the best views of Bodrum. Located on the main highway, the theatre was built 2000 years ago and is currently under restoration. Worth visiting simply to sit and admire the breathtaking beauty of Bodrum Harbor. Of course The Ancient City of Ephesus and the "Cotton Castles" of Pammukale are definitely worth the few hours drive. Bodrum is also filled with modern day attractions: Every October, The Annual Bodrum Cup Wooden Yacht Regatta attracts wooden sailing yachts from all over the world competing for the coveted Cup! Anyone can join the race, whether it be a professional, an amateur, or if your lucky enough to be a guest, you know the excitement and glory of the race has become more popular every year. The Bodrum Market & Bazaar is held every Friday, featuring local farmers fresh produce and on Tuesdays, features handicrafts, clothing and fabrics. Located at the Bodrum main bus station, there are many bargains to be had here. ....and there is much more to see and do here. You must come and visit and see for yourself!
